Stenography comprises skills in Shorthand, Transcription and Typewriting. It is indispensable in business, profession, vocation and administration-wherever it is desirable to have a quick and verbatim record of the spoken words.This skill is being included in the curriculum as many students have the aptitude towards this particular area. Besides, its knowledge provides early employment opportunities. It is expected that the learners, after getting training in this field, will not face difficulty in getting suitable jobs.
Skills Required
- Student should be able to arrange & confirm appointments, organize & external events, handle incoming mail & other material & set up & maintain filing systems.
- Applicants should possess good internal personal & communication skills as they have to speak/talk with different types during working hours.
- They should have quick mind, hard worker, good sitting capacity & good typing speed.
- They should also have skills like verbal & written communication skills, attention to details, planning & organizing, time management & customer service orientation.
Nature of Job
Stenographers are court reporters in the fundamental sense. They work to capture all of the legal proceedings in a very accurate way. This may sound like a simple task initially, but it involves a great deal of hard work, special tools, and a great attention to detail which the stenographer must possess. Most often, stenographers work in an actual courtroom and that is where most people are accustomed to seeing them appear. They work to capture all of the words exchanged during court proceedings and record them in the most appropriate manner.
Though they spend most of their time in the courtroom, they may also work in other capacities. They may be involved in special events, meetings, or any other venue where capturing accurate legal proceedings is important. They generally work for an individual or a large group and help them with whatever recording that they may need. They work through a variety of different tools and methods to capture what the people are saying, and therefore must be able to focus in on the events at hand.
There are several recording tools that may be used by a stenographer. There is a special mask that they can use to capture the words, as well as several tools that allow them to quickly and accurately transcribe the words. A big part of the responsibility of a stenographer is to learn and become familiar with these tools and any new methods that they may use. They may be involved in research or training as they work to perfect their job and responsibilities through these methods.
Eligibility & Admissions
- Passed 10th Class Examination with Hindi as compulsory subject.
- Performa for admission may be obtained from the respective State Directorate dealing with Craftsmen Training Scheme or from the Principals of the concerned Industrial Training Institutes/ centers conducting training programme under Craftsmen Training Scheme.
Job Prospects
One can pursue higher studies like diploma in engineering after completing the engineering trading course in ITI. Specialized short-term courses for certain trades are also offered in Advanced Training Institutes (ATIs) that hone the candidates’ skill. Many industries/ companies accept ITI graduates only as apprentices and they train the candidates for a period of 6 months to 1-2 years. However the period of training the admission of the candidates may vary from one company to the other. These candidates may be considered suitable for employment only after the training period. Renowned ITIs and ITCs have their own placement cells and candidates after the completion of their trades may be directly recruited by the companies.
ITI qualified candidates can apply for jobs in either private or public sector depending on the trades they are equipped with. Some of the trades that are much in demand are electronics welder refrigeration and air-conditioner mechanic. It is worthwhile to mention that electronics is the basis of almost every field. Therefore it has a very good scope. Electronic mechanic trade graduates can find job opportunities in IT companies and in manufacturing units of electronics equipment.
Both welders and air-conditioner mechanics have good scope both in India and abroad. Job openings of A/C mechanics are available in the different sections of the Public Service Commission (PSC) and in railways where they will be employed as technicians instructors etc. Job opportunities for fitters are enormous in onshore and offshore companies such as oil and gas factories shipyards etc. Candidates with electrician trade can find openings in the electricity board / department for which the recruitment is through PSC (Public service Commission) Exams.
Candidates can also find job opportunities in government organizations like Indian Army Indian NAvy Air force Railways Telecom and paramilitary forces like BSF (Border Security Force) CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) etc. Last but not the least candidates can also be self-employed by setting up their own winding shops garage fabrication shops etc.
