Career in Aeronautical Engineering

A career in aeronautical engineering is one of the most exciting careers in the engineering field. Aeronautical Engineering is a specialized engineering stream that deals with the designing, manufacturing, testing and maintenance of aircraft in commercial aviation and defense sectors. But Aeronautical Engineering is different from aerospace engineering. This course mainly concentrates on the flying vehicles functioning within the earth’s atmosphere whereas in aerospace engineering its vehicles in space.  A course in Aeronautical Engineering encompasses the study of advanced level Physics and Mathematics with emphasis on Thermodynamics, Propulsion Systems, Fluid Mechanics, Applied Mathematics and Aerodynamics. Aeronautical Engineers are highly paid professionals who work in teams in the areas of aircraft building, communication techniques, safety and control systems and navigational management.

 

Skills Required

The field is heavily technical and hence challenging. What an aeronautical engineer requires is a strong mathematical base,and a creative and analytical mind. Those who wish to take the defense route after this degree should preferably be physically fit. Hard Work is necessary as the process of preparing for your CET and clearing it is not easy. 4 years of engineering will not be a cakewalk and the career demands the best out of you too.

 

Courses

Aeronautical engineering programs in India are offered in two ways – firstly, as an undergraduate and postgraduate level engineering and technology degree and as undergraduate level AMAeSI course which is certified by the Aeronautical Society of India, Government of India. The syllabus for both is similar and both these courses are approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). The biggest difference between them is that the degree course requires an entrance test for admissions and the AMAeSI courses does not require one. The examinations are tougher for AMAeSI and maximum number of years given to complete the course is 6 years. For degree courses the undergraduate (U.G.) B.Tech or B.E. degrees are for a duration of 4 years and P.G. or Postgraduate Degrees are for a duration of 2 years.

Job Prospects

An aeronautical engineer can look for jobs in civil, military aviation and the MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) industry. Most colleges offer internships which could be very useful for deciding what’s next. Graduates can look at technical engineer or aeronautical engineer positions through placements at the undergraduate level and after post graduation a slightly wider net covering aeronautical engineer positions in aircraft design and production, research and development wing of the defense sector companies and aircraft testing laboratories. Public and private sector companies that recruit Aeronautical Engineering graduates and post graduates are Indian Airlines, Pawan Hans, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, ONGC, Indian Air Force, Indian Navy, Air India, DRDO (Defense Research and Development Laboratories), National Aeronautical Laboratories, Safran Aerospace, Boeing Commercial Airplane Company and SpiceJet.
