Government Polytechnic, Gadag is an AICTE approved technical institute under the Department Of Technical Education started in the year 2008. It has own 10 acre campus, a main building, a girls hostel, classroom for various faculties including Mechanical, Civil, Computer Science and Electronics & Communication, Workshop, Computer Lab, Electrical & Electronics lab, Library and other facilities and has the capacity to groom more than 150 students in various engineering fields every year.

Library

The library is housed in a spacious facility.
The library has around 800 technical course-related books as of the year of 2014.
The library reading space can accommodate nearly 30-40 students.

Hostel

• The institute has a girls hostel situated at the college campus itself, which was granted by HRD, New Delhi.
• The girl’s hostel building is constructed by PWD, Gadag, with a spending of Rs. 1,00,00,000/- .
• The hostel was opened in early 2013.
• This well-ventilated building spreads across 6223.19 sq.mtrs.
• The facilities in the building include – 8 Rooms, each measuring 233.16 sq.mtrs, Common Dining Room – 578.48 sq. mtrs, Kitchen – 299.64 Sq.mtrs, Bathroom – 48.22 Sq.mtrs.
• The hostel has well-designed rooms with modern amenities and facilities.
• The hostel is ready to be occupied
• This facility would be a boon to the girls from rural and remote places once started functioning

The boy’s hostel is under construction at the college campus.

NSS
The National Service Scheme (NSS) is an Indian government-sponsored public service program conducted by the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports of the Government of India. Popularly known as NSS, the scheme was launched in Gandhiji’s Centenary year, 1969. Aimed at developing student’s personality through community service, NSS is a voluntary association of young people in colleges. The cardinal principle of the NSS programme is that it is organized by the students themselves, and both students and teachers through their combined participation in community service, get a sense of involvement in the tasks of nation-building.

Motto:
“NOT ME, NOT YOU, BUT WE”. This reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for selfless service and appreciation of the other person’s point of view and also to show consideration for fellow human beings. It underlines that the welfare of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of society on the whole. Therefore, it should be the aim of the NSS to demonstrate this motto in its day-to-day programme.

Objectives:
The broad objectives of NSS are to:

• Understand the community in which they work.
• Understand themselves in relation to their community.
• Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in the problem-solving process.
• Develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility.
• Utilize their knowledge in finding the practical solution to individual and community problems.
• Develop competence required for group living and sharing of responsibilities.
• Gain skills in mobilizing community participation.
• Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude.
• Develop the capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters
• Practice national integration and social harmony.

Youth Red Cross (YRC)

Introduction:
The Youth Red Cross (YRC) in Government Polytechnic, Gadag is one of the avenues available to the students to be pursued under Personality and Character Development Programme.

The Red Cross, established in 1863 in Geneva, by Jean Henry Dunant, is an international organization meant for humanitarian services. Its headquarters are in Geneva, Switzerland with many affiliated National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. It is a non-religious, non-political and nonsectarian International body. Regardless of either frontiers or race, the Red Cross remains a voluntary organization and also an independent one having considerable welfare activities to its credit.

The seven fundamental principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement are:

1. Humanity
2. Impartiality
3. Neutrality
4. Independence
5. Voluntary Service
6. Unity
7. Universality

Red Cross Society functions with the one and only aim of serving people in distress without any consideration of caste, religion, language and nationality.

The Indian Red Cross Society serves as an auxiliary to the state authorities engaged in social welfare activities accepting the rules and regulations of the state, but at the same time maintaining its autonomy so that it can act always in accordance with the fundamental principles.

Establishment:
The YRC is the most important constituent of its mother organization, Indian Red Cross. It is a student movement organized for students in colleges. YRC in Government Polytechnic, Gadag was established in the academic year 2012-13 as per the orders of the Department Of Technical Education and Government of Karnataka.

What is Youth Red Cross?
The Youth Red Cross is the most important constituent of its mother organization, Indian Red Cross. It is a group movement organized at the initial stages for students between 18 and 25 years of age within the colleges.

Main Objectives of Youth Red Cross:
The main purpose of organizing the Youth Red Cross is:

• To inculcate in the youth of our country.
• An awareness of the care of their own health & that of others.
• The understanding & acceptance of civic responsibilities acting accordingly with humanitarian concerns, to fulfill the same.
• To enable the growth & development of a spirit of service and sense of duty with dedication and devotion in the minds of the youth.
• To foster a better friendly relationship with all without any discrimination.

Principles of Youth Red Cross:
Youth Red Cross has the following three principles:

• Protection of health & life
• Service to the sick & suffering
• Promotion of National & International Friendship, to develop the mental and moral capacities of the youth.

Activities:
No hard and fast rules are laid down regarding Youth Red Cross activities. The programme should be adapted to the particular needs of the unit under Programme Officer’s guidance. Youth should be encouraged to manage their own affairs and choose their own activities. Their programme should as far as possible include something under each of the following heads:

• Promotion of health & hygiene
• Service to others.
• Relief work during emergencies like flood, fire & other natural calamities
• National integration
• World friendliness

Sports
The institute will develop sports facilities for the students which will help in the holistic development of the students. Polytechnic is striving with tooth and nail to cultivate sportsmanship along with regular academic activities and to bring out the potential sports talents of the students. As a result, many students are taking part in various sports activities. Our institution is well equipped with sports facilities for indoor games such as chess, carrom and outdoor games

The institute will further construct infrastructure facilities like:

Placement
The institute has got the dedicated team to strengthen the corporate relations and make tie ups with reputed organizations for the final placements and also trying to a network with the best companies in IT, Telecommunications, Mechanical, Electrical, retailing, manufacturing and many other industry sectors on a day to day basis. This has resulted in a strong and beneficial relationship for the students, the Institute and the business community. Industry and Corporate Personnel are regularly invited to interact with students and give them the feel of real life industry/business scenario. Every student is provided with ample opportunities for employment through campus interviews and placement processes which are conducted regularly for the entire year.

The placement cell is co-ordinated by a Training and Placement Co-ordinator with a dedicated team of students under the mentorship of experienced faculty from each department who provide students with the support, resources and tools necessary to meet the challenges of a fast-paced and competitive employment market. A seed has never grown into a tree unless it takes its own chance to sprout out and adopt itself to the nature for a journey. Likewise, opportunities come rare and unless you try a chance and suit yourself into boots and travel along to make your dream come true.
