Government Polytechnic, Channapatna is situated in the toys town Channapatna on the Bangalore – Mysore road (SH-17). It was one of the first institutions established after post independence in the year 1958. The present building was inaugurated by Sri Kamaraj, President of Indian National Congress and presided over by Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri, the Union ministers in the year 1964.
The institute is functioning in its own building in a sprawling campus of 11.5 acres. The Polytechnic is run by Government of Karnataka, comes under Directorate of Technical Education. It is a co-educational institute. Girls constitute 1/3rd of the strength of the students. Our institute is the most sought institute by students of rural Bangalore and rural Mandya district. Hostel facility is also available for boys.

Campus Infrastructure
The campus is located at the outskirts of the city. With lush green lawns and serene ambiance, it provides an appropriate environment for academic work and provides the following amenities for all round growth of budding engineers.
Teaching Facilities
The learning and teaching facilities in the college are excellent. Well-equipped classrooms, workshops, computer labs, library and learning center ensure that our students study in a pleasant environment with up to date equipment and software.
Infrastructure
The infrastructure also includes a state of art computer laboratory with servers and internet facilities and workstations have welding and smithy equipments that provide hands-on experience to our engineering students. Apart from this, each department has its own discipline based laboratories for study and research.
Administration
The Government Polytechnic, Channapatna is having a committed and dedicated administrative staff team, which is responsible for the maintenance and supervision of both academic and non-academic affairs and bringing together all departments of the institution.
Hostel
The college provides hostel facilities for boys.
Playground
A cricket field and volleyball court exist in the campus, apart from a host of other facilities for indoor and outdoor games.
Library
The college has excellent library facility with more than 1300 textbooks and DVDs catering the needs of all the students.
National Service Scheme (NSS)
It is a youth programmed under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Department of Technical Education and is supported by Government of Karnataka. The main objective of this scheme is to develop student’s personality through community service and its motto is “Not me but you” — it upholds the need of selfless service and consideration towards fellow human beings.
Government Polytechnic, Channapatna has one NSS unit. The NSS unit renders social service in nearby villages, campus cleaning, tree plantation, blood donation camp.
Sri. Prabhu B A, Selection Grade Lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering is working as NSS officer.
ISTE
ISTE (Indian society for technical education) is a premier national society for teachers and students of National Technical Education System. One of its major objectives is to assist & contribute to the production & development of top quality professional engineers & technicians needed by industries.
ISTE Student Chapter was established in the year 1997 & ISTE Chapter was started in the year 1998 in our institute.
ISTE Chapter of our institute has been actively involved in organizing programs related to the enhancement of knowledge & skills of teachers. Around 25 teachers of our institute are life members of ISTE.
ISTE Student Chapter has been carrying out various programs for its student members prominent among them are personality development programs, career guidance programs, counseling services, project management, program & report writing etc.
Under the guidance of Sri.B L Prakash, Chapter Secretary, Selection Grade Lecturer, Department of Mechanical Engineering, ISTE is contributing to the development of Technical Education among faculty & students.
CDTP
Community Development Through Polytechnic Scheme (CDTP)
CDTP was introduced in the year 1994 in our esteemed institution. The economic status of rural youth is very poor. The affordability of the to pursue skill development training and education is a questionable task.
More than 75% of surrounding villages of Channapatna depends on agriculture. The technical skills that assist them in that field are in high demand. With these objectives, CDTP was introduced in rural areas to cater the needs of rural youth in this region.
CDTP of our institute is offering following courses at our institute and extension centers.

Sri. Damodara N, HOD of Automobile Engineering Dept. is working as project officer of CDTP.
CCTEK
Center for Continuing Technical Education in Karnataka (C.C.T.E.K.) functions as an autonomous governing body. It contributes to technical education programs in all the areas. The target group comprises of community people, working class, students etc.
Subcenter of CCTEK at our institute is housed within the polytechnic. The funds generated from the programs run by CCTEK can be used for the overall development of the institution. The decisions regarding CCTEK activities are taken and coordinated at the polytechnic level by a committee comprising of Principal, all the department HODs and senior faculty. CCTEK has organized many short-term training programs and will continue to do so.
Sri. Balaraju C, Selection Grade Lecturer in Civil Engineering Department, is working as CCTEK Manager.
Alumni Association
Govt. Polytechnic, Channapatna has produced many engineers, academicians and technicians who have contributed immensely to the industry both in India and abroad. A group of those alumni took an initiative to establish the Alumni Association in the year 1996. The Alumni Association aims at connecting alumni of the Polytechnic across various branches, batches and interests and provides them a platform to interact.
The objectives of the Alumni Association are:
To build a strong network among the alumni’s community.
To create a common interest group among alumni and to provide a forum for discussion.
To impart career guidance for the current students of the institution.
To provide a platform for the members to share their experiences for the benefit of present younger generation.
To arrange guest lectures every year for the benefit of students.
To conduct Inter Polytechnic “Bhavageethe” competition in memory of Late Sri P Muniyappa, the founder Principal.
To honor alumni members who have obtained Ph. D degree.
To honor topper student in each branch of final year diploma at Govt. Polytechnic, Channapatna.

RTI
A well-organized placement cell is working at Government Polytechnic, Channapatna, which continuously monitors the employment potentials and arranges the campus placements for the students. The faculties from all the departments support the smooth running of the placement process.
The cell acts as a liaison between the industry and students in order to fulfill their ambition in getting the right job and at the same time provides the industry the much needed fresh talents for the growth.
Career guidance programs and lectures from industry experts are arranged to give students exposure to the technical and soft skills needed by the industry.
